Developed by Griffith University Public Health students, in consultation with Broadband for Seniors at Lynne Richardson Community Centre, this helpful brochure contains information and contact points for a range of health providers and services.

Broadband for Seniors is a free service providing computer and internet skills training for Seniors aged 50+.

Training is conducted by volunteer tutors primarily on a "one to one" basis and paced to suit each trainee's needs and skill level.

Training Sessions are held each Tuesday and Friday from 10am to 12noon, utilising the centre’s computers or the trainee's own laptop or tablet computer linked to the free in-house wifi.  Trainees’ own computers are checked to ensure they have the appropriate security and malware software installed and activated.

Tea and Coffee are also provided free of charge.

Training topics include:

  • Basic Computer Skills: Keyboard, mouse, logging on and logging off, creating user accounts; changing the computer’s settings, etc.
  • Understanding and managing the computer’s filing system.
  • Using internet browsers (e.g. internet explorer, google chrome, mozilla firefox, etc) and also the search engine “Google” to find information on the internet.
  • Understanding and managing internet bookmarks (aka Favourites).
  • Setting up an email account, such as Hotmail or Gmail, to send and receive emails.
  • Attaching and sending photos via email; saving photos received via email; and downloading photos from a camera or mobile phone.
  • Managing passwords.
  • Using Skype to make phone calls and video calls on the internet.
  • Using Facebook to communicate with family and friends.
  • Shopping and banking online safely,
  • Subscribing to and unsubscribing from newsletters and mailing lists.
  • Other topics may be added depending on demand.
